NZ WETLANDS
Our wetlands are facing a crisis. They are abound with life & their inhabitants
are familiar to us all. However, over 90% of our wetlands are gone & many of
our plants and animals now face severe threats. The Conservation Department
can't save everything, and the losses are still mounting. You can help save our
precious wetlands.

INFORMATION


What is a Wetland? A wetland is an area of land whose soil is saturated with moisture either permanently or seasonally. Such areas may also be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water. They come in many different guises, including bogs, streams, swamps, lakes, lagoons, estuaries, mudflats and flood plains. The water found in wetlands can be saltwater, freshwater, or brackish. WORK IN PROGRESS

Wairio Wetland Restoration Project

In 2005 DU and DOC signed an initial 5 year,
Land Management Agreement whereby DU
would commence, in partnership with DOC,
the restoration of the Wairio Wetland.

DOC and DU are in the process of formalizing
a further 5 year extension on the same terms
and conditions as the original agreement to
complete further agreed works and handle the
ongoing management of the wetland. DOC will
continue to retain the absolute right to determine
if the arrangement should be extended, or even
to terminate the arrangement at any stage if they
are not happy with DU's performance or if DOC's
objectives for the Wetland change in some way.
