Kuruwhengi (Shoveler)
| With its broad flat bill which is used for filtering its food from the rich water of lowland wetlands, the Shoveler is very distinctive, however, its extremely secretive nature means a "spoonie" is rarely seen at close quarters. The male a colourful bird, with a prominent white facial cresent. In flight, Kuruwhengi are fast and erratic and can travel long distances, therefore, the conservation of wetlands throughout the country is vital for their future survival. |
