Kuruwhengi (Shoveler)
With its broad flat bill which is used for filtering its food from the rich water of lowland wetlands, the Shoveler is very distinctive, however, its extremely secretive nature means a "spoonie" is rarely seen at close quarters. The male a colourful bird, with a prominent white facial cresent. In flight, Kuruwhengi are fast and erratic and can travel long distances, therefore, the conservation of wetlands throughout the country is vital for their future survival.
